Clare Shakya

Danny was a mate. He had a brilliant sense of humour. He never let seniority affect how he was or how he saw others. As a result he was a hugely effective antidote to civil service bureaucracy. And we were close allies back in 2003 when we both joined DFID HQ & survived the chaos in the policy trenches when the kingdoms of chief advisers were dismantled and suddenly policy teams had no champions and we had to find new ways to engage top management. It was tough but it was also a laugh thanks to Danny. And that never changed. Danny was someone we could all trust to have our backs. And trust to do the right thing. We need more Danny’s, not less. So sending my very biggest hugs to Danny’s family & hoping we can all take the loss of our hugely inspirational friend as a reason to emulate him, to channel his humour and humility and be better humans.
