Bernie McConnell - my Vice
Bernie was the Vice Chairman of the Scottish Fisheries Museum BOATS Club – looking after REAPER FR958 & WHITEWING ME113, both very old wooden boats. A crew of 10 sailing alongside retired fishing skippers & skippers never have a decent word to say about seals as they eat copious quantities of fish! – so there was a constant good humoured argument about Bernie’s affiliation with seals! However everyone would be fascinated, at the end of a long sail or a day of being open to the public in for example Portsoy (Wooden Boat Festival), when Bernie would fire up his laptop & begin tracking the seals in what seemed like the far corners of the world. He explained, with humour, why the research was so important & as I recall quite a few BC members attended his talks – including at least one skipper! He had many interests & commitments to various organisations but I know getting home to Lel & his boys was a top priority. Bernie will be fondly remembered by all in the BC for his dedication, commitment plus his thoroughly good & sometimes off the wall humour!
