S A Vanar (1951-2021)
Vanar’s reputation truly preceded him. Have heard so many stories from colleagues before my chance came to review an audit file with him one-on-one. It was indeed a nerve wrecking experience on that day of reckoning and I thought I saw my life flash before my eyes. It didn’t help when his secretary, Maggie Ho, whispered “Good Luck” just before I entered his office. In reflection, it was not all that bad despite all the rebukes I copped as there were some useful lessons to be taken away from that experience. He even offered me a hot drink when the tea lady came by with the cart during morning tea break. I got the privilege to see a friendlier side of Vanar when he asked me to give him a lift to pick up his BMW from the workshop in Segambut on my way home one evening. Turns out he knew a thing or two about the Peugeot 504 I drove and we enjoyed some small talks during the journey. Even years after leaving KPMG, I still have fond memories of my time spent working under him. We bumped into each other one more time some years back at the airport and he still remembers my face. A truly down to earth gentlemen with a big heart. May his soul rest in peace.
