In common with many others, I was deeply shocked to hear of Martin’s death. I send my heartfelt condolences to his wife and three children.
I shared time working with Martin in Derby at AEA Technology, but our paths didn’t cross again until I joined RSSB in 2009. Martin and I worked closely on vehicle dynamics projects when crosswinds, and hence train aerodynamics, were involved. I think we did a good job of trying to resolve how to sensibly allow for wind effects into vehicle movements, and hence into gauging.
I found Martin to be modest, open and very positive to work with. He retained a boyish enthusiasm for his work and, particularly, his cycling. I am really going to miss working with him and seeing him around the office; he was a lovely person.
