Don Butler

The Mauds have known Don for 50+ years. Firstly through Brian Maud who played against the Unicorns for the NYP and later by the three Maud sons Steve, Dave and Tony who all played at York RI as Colts and in the Senior sides as very young men.

Donald although very much a York RUFC player and member, transcended the divide between the two York clubs seemlessly and was very much respected by all those associated with both clubs and those of us who would play against the Unicorns as well as for them.

His repertoire of rugby songs was legendary. Which was always an ice breaker and he was always at the centre of the sing song and merry making.

Although a different generation completely from me, Dave and Tony it was never an issue and he is very fondly remembered, admired and respected by us all.

Don you are massive loss not only to York RUFC, but to rugby as a whole and the City of York.

Personally I will miss, with a very heavy heart, our conversations, your company and friendship.

R.I.P. Don from The Maud’s.
