Kathryn Rudd OBE
Kathryn – your wit, warmth, and enthusiasm for life and work were enormous. Although our interactions were all as professionals, I thought of you very soon after first meeting you as a friend. Many of our work-related dealings were characterised by high jinks (including in contexts where that was probably highly inappropriate!). We bonded over a shared distaste for the word ‘flange’ and what we later referred to as ‘the case of the missing overcoat.’ You were hugely supportive of me as a newly appointed quango official, introducing me to the world of specialist FE and setting me straight on my many misapprehensions about the sector. Many years later, it was a hilarious encounter with you in the ladies’ toilets at a Natspec conference, when you were chair of the organisation, that led directly to me taking my current job. What an influence you have been on me, and on so many others working with young people with disabilities. This is just one part of your rich legacy; the difference you have made to young people themselves and to their families is unfathomable. And in setting up your foundation, you’ve ensured that will continue in perpetuity. You were – and you remain – a force for good in this world.
