Roger Kennedy

I  have a number of memories of Roger – a very special person. The one that stands out most is when he was staying at our family home in Liverpool. My brothers and I were quite young at the time and very impressed by him. One day he sat cross legged on the floor, put on a Neru style hat, and clapping his hands enthusiastically taught us the song “Yisuh ne kaha jeewan ki roti” etc. (at least that’s how I would write it in Roman Urdu).  Years later when I went to Pakistan I sang it in church and it brought back vivid memories of Roger teaching it to us, although of course then I didn’t really know what I was singing. I remember too his great sense of humour as he related things to us with a dead-pan expression; we of course couldn’t contain our laughter, but sometimes he semed so serious that I think we wondered if we were meant to laugh or not!!!

I remember Roger staying with us on a number of occasions, and also at least once the whole family, and I also remember going down to the docks in Liverpool to wave you off on the boat to India. That had a big impact on me as a child as I thought of what you were going off to, and your willingness to do it for the Lord, and my own missionary interest was kindled as a child by folks like Roger and you June staying in our home. How grateful I am for those times and the role you played in my journey towards Pakistan.

Roger was a gentle giant, a lovely man for whom I had the greatest respect, admiration and affection. He served the Lord faithfully for many years and has now heard the “Well done, good and faithful servant”.
