Rod Newman
It was Rod’s careful nurturing of young plants (read – immature young hot heads!) in the Woodvale greenhouse that resulted in such a disproportionate number of impressive blooms. Rod was the ‘legend’. The exceptional teacher that everyone respected and remembered, those outstanding instructional and personal traits, that quiet competence, never a rush, timely interventions, the highest of standards and all topped off with respectful humour. It was an enormous privelege to fly again with Rod, in a Spitfire, some 38 years after we first flew together in May 1976. Neither of us then would have thought we would still be friends 44 years later. I know of no one who had so many enduring longterm friendships and that just says it all. In life and death Rod remains the legend. Rod – Thanks for being a great friend and guide.
