My mentor at UCL, Stan Murrell, held Mervyn in the highest esteem. Once I came to know Mervyn, so did I. His contribution to our field of science has been immense and his monograph on brittle deformation is our bible. My abiding personal memory is inviting Mervyn to dinner when we were both at a conference at ETH Zurich, since I knew me both enjoyed a glass of red wine. He said I should find a more stimulating dinner partner as he had recently become a vegan. So we never had that dinner, but I did raise a glass on hearing of his passing. Salut Mervyn!
