I was very sorry to hear of this sad news and send my heart-felt condolences to Katharine, Helen and Elspeth.

John was always very kind to me and generous with his time. I remember when I was thinking about starting out as a young teacher, he took me along to his office at BHS to talk me through some of the educational initiatives of the time. After a very short while he turned to me and said “You know, all of this will come and go. What really matters in teaching is whether you enjoy spending time in the company of children.” His words have stayed with me for over 30 years and I have shared them often.
