To Richard’s family,
I met Richard in August 2019, when I was hired as a paralegal for Kantar’s legal team while Richard was acting General Counsel. I immediately liked Richard – how could you not – and was struck by the warmth, humour and intelligence with which he approached his leadership. Soon after meeting Richard, he learnt I was hoping to pursue a career at the Bar. Upon that discovery, Richard informed me that he would do everything he could to make sure I got to where I wanted to go and told me that he was certain I would make an excellent barrister. It was the first time anyone had ever told me that.
In the following months and years, Richard consistently provided me with support, encouragement and opportunities. He wrote me numerous character references and, as I currently plough through interviews, I am fully aware that the reason I am sitting in front of those interview panels is because of Richard – because he believed in me. Yes, Richard was my manager, but he was also my mentor.
Richard said something to me one morning that has rooted itself in my memory. He said that the key to long-lasting, loving relationships was to be kind. It is clear to me that, although only knowing Richard for a short time, he truly put his theory into practice. I have yet to meet someone whose kindness was so pure. I am devastated that the world has lost such a wonderful man, but I feel privileged to have met and worked with him.
My sincere condolences.
