Professor Simon Keay FBA
As a freelance PR adviser, I was proud to be asked to lead two press trips to Portus in 2009 and 2011 to help spread the word about the wonderful research underway by Simon and his team. Journalists from the BBC, ITV and Press Association filmed on location and interviewed Simon at the heart of the excavations. It all made great TV and he was, of course, superb.
Simon was a brilliant and accomplished scholar, taken from us far too soon. For me, he was the kindest and most thoughtful of academics, always keen to work closely with media to reach new audiences and enthuse ordinary people about the Roman world.
I have the happiest memories of those summer days in Rome and I am delighted I played a small part in this early example of outstanding research ‘impact’.
