Maxine Marie James
Dearest Maxine, our world is a little less happy today and I am deeply sad for your passing.
I first met you taking your photo for the 2006 Lambeth Labour manifesto and our paths have since crossed countless times. Our most recent project was a serious attempt to guarantee excellent quality BAME Labour council candidates for 2022, of which I’m sure you would also have been one. Lambeth’s future is less bright without you. Trailblazing always.
I will never forget our conversations on race, equality and fairness, but it was your consistent challenge to “check my thinking” and understand my motivations that will stay with me. You kept me honest to myself over the years, a rare challenge and I will miss it.
Michelle Obama is famously quoted as saying “When they go low, we go high.” In different ways you’ve been telling me that for years and it stuck.
I’ll miss your laughter, I’ll miss your fun. We did gravity without abandoning levity, and your personal support was generously given and gratefully welcomed.
Thank you Maxine for making the world a better place with your joyful expectation and actions. All my love
