Lionel Stephens

Lionel was a great history teacher, and thanks to him my A level results were good enough to apply to Oxford. One fly in the ointment was that the then ‘Nautical College’ did not cater for the essential Latin, but my Oriel interviewers were so surprised to see a Pangbourne cadet of that era with decent A levels that they offered me a place conditional on obtaining Latin O Level! Lionel & Joe Laxton (our chaplain) then set about giving me a crash course in Latin, to such effect that after less than six months teaching that not only did I pass it easily, but went on to ace the mandatory Latin paper in Modern History prelims. Whenever I do a peer review for an Historical Journal I still think of the way he taught me.
