Don’s passing comes as shocking news given his fit state of mind and body. Really sad to say the least. My last communication with him, was a hearty message to say that he will be visiting Cape Town in February 2024. I know Don as a comrade and as a freind who stood firm in his political views on South African and international politics. He always shared incisive points on world politics but his active interest in South Africa never waned after all these years of living in the UK. His love and care for Margaret, and her love for him, was like a beacon of light to observe. He always spoke to me with pride about Jacqui, Lesley and his grandchildren and I was touched by the deep place they occupied in his heart. In the 1980’s when my younger sister had to flee South Africa (Cape Town), that at the time was under brutal apartheid rule, Don opened his door for her in London. He offered her guidance and protection as she was a young teeneager filled with the energy to change the world. The imapct of his courage and commitment under those circumstances stays with us for the rest of our lives. We miss you Don- your broad smile, warm and engaging manner and your sharp mind is vivid as we think of you. Rest in peace my brother.
