George Walker

I am deeply saddened by George’s passing. He was and will remain a great man to me. I became a teacher because I discovered the IB, “An education for peace” as he called it. That was in 1998, in Jerusalem, at a time of political unheaval and civil unrest. George’s words and deeds resonated deeply with me and they still do. I find his capacity to connect people, places and the passage of time, with learning and meaning, both profound and prophetic. His connections and references to Jonathan Sacks’ “Dignity of Difference” helped me understand more about myself and the contexts I worked in. For the past three weeks I have been doing a critical appraisal of “East is East, West is West” with a Senior class – back in Jerusalem. He modelled the way through his deep knowledge and love of Science and Music. Most of all, for me, he lived out the beliefs and values of the IB, with a passionate authenticity that I will always find both aspirational and inspirational. It was a privilege to meet the man. “Other people, with their differences, can also be right”. Thank you, Professor. Thank you, George.
