Sheila Gardner

For everyone who knew Sheila we knew what a kind and fun character she was. Her favourite part of her role at the CAA was looking after the medical reception desk and she was the ‘unoffical GateKeeper’ where she kept a sharp eye and a tight rein on everyone who came in and out of Medical (if you hadn’t sanitised you weren’t allowed entry). She had a scarf for every outfit and always made sure she looked smart to greet everyone and enjoyed talking to both her colleagues and external visitors making those with medical appointments feel at ease. She loved a good cup of coffee and always seemed to have one in her hand. Her commitment to her work and team was always above and beyond any set expectation, and she will be greatly missed.

When I was at the CAA the first time around, Sheila and I were usually the last out the office, and we had many after hours chats, putting both the World and the CAA Med dept to rights. Sheila liked things done ‘properly’ and woe betide anyone who didn’t do so…..she took great pride in her work, and guarded the Stationery cupboard fiercely. Her Family, friends and her dogs were her world outside work, and I am sure she will be very sorely missed by all of them, she has certainly left a Sheila sized hole in Medical, my condolences to all of you. Rest well Sheila, you have more than earnt it.   …

Sheila was such a helpful, caring and funny person who made an impact on mine and many others lives. I really appreciate the times I got to share with her. It was so good arriving in reception each morning to her greeting and see what beautiful colour clothing she had chosen to wear that day and she had a scarf for every occasion. My son, Finlay, loved to see and chat to Sheila on his visits to the office.  Our thoughts are with you Neil, John and family for your very sad loss. Love Sacha and Finlay xx …

Sheila will be missed as a colleague and a friend, for the welcomes she gave as people came into the department and for her willingness to help those nervous pilots and ATCOs attending the clinics. I will remember Sheila fondly for her diplomatic, yet no nonsense, tell it as it is approach and the wisdom she has imparted over the last decade. My condolences to Neil and the family.  …

Sheila, you were one of the most strongest, funniest persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. From the moment I started at the CAA, you made me feel so welcomed, and were always so happy to help not just me but everyone in the Medical Department. You were a true, wise friend to many.  I remember our laughs we would have whilst trying to pass the time on clinic days which often resulted in us having a debate which supermarket sold the best sausages!  I really will miss you Sheila but take comfort in all the memories created. I hope they have plenty of milky Lattes up there! Shine bright xxxx  …

Sheila was introduced to me as the queen of our medical reception and I knew then that this was a very special lady as she felt equally as passionate about the pilots as I did. Unfortunately I did not have much time to get to know her due to her illness, but I could tell she was one very amazing lady that had everyone’s utmost respect. I wish I had more time to get to know her better but her legacy at the CAA will certainly live on. God bless and much love to her family. Xx …

Jane & Sue

When I think of Shelia I think of bright colours.  Shelia loved to wear colours she very rarely wore black and always had Shelia always co-ordinated a scarf to match her outfits at work.  Shelia will be missed very much by her colleagues and friends in the  SSC Aeromedical. Shelia was a matriach within our team and cared for her colleagues.  Shelia loved going to the coast and always treated us to shortbread biscuits.  Shelia  will never be forgotten and will always be close to our hearts. Love Jane & Sue xxx …

Sheila was a warm, friendly and a kind lady who I had the pleasure of working with when I first started in the CAA’s Medical department. She always had wise words and stories to share, made me laugh and had a different scarf for every day of the week. Thank you for the memories Sheila, you will be dearly missed.   …

It is with a heavy heart that i write these words. Whilst i had only known Sheila for a few years i very quickly realised what a positive impact she had not only within the SSC team but also with all the Medical team and patients too. She was such a colourful character even with everything going on in her life and continued to have such a positive outlook. She warmly welcomed everyone into the department and nothing was too much trouble for her. She leaves a team behind that will miss all the gentle scolding she would dish out when we hadn’t followed her precise instructions and coffee breaks just wont be the same. Rest now Sheila.    …
