Book of Remembrance of

Richard Maloney

Richard worked with Kantar for over 6 years as independent legal counsel. He forged many strong relationships and helped us conclude some of the biggest contracts supporting our Top 20 Global Client Leaders. Richard also mentored members of the legal team. He showed what true partnership was, how to build relationships across the world and impart advice and wisdom. Many colleagues have already expressed their shock and grief at his passing. Richard will be missed dearly. Many at Kantar saw him as a friend, mentor and trusted colleague. Richard left a wonderful legacy that spoke to his generosity, intelligence and caring nature. In March, he wrote about setting up Spine Counsel as follows: “The rather lofty purpose I set myself when I started Spine Counsel was to change the perception held that lawyers were necessary evils that every business had no choice but to engage with especially when something goes wrong to one where lawyers are seen as trusted advisers that can help a business to mitigate risk, create value and scale profitably. Instructing a lawyer is personal. Ensuring the lawyer you instruct gets your business and is available when you need support is essential. Done right, it makes for a really effective relationship.”

I sat across the table from Richard at Facebook when negotiating contracts with Kantar. We often had sensitive, nuanced points that we needed to discuss, and I could trust that he was going to be upfront and straightforward with his position while also trying to deeply understand my company’s concerns and looking for creative …

To Richard’s family, I met Richard in August 2019, when I was hired as a paralegal for Kantar’s legal team while Richard was acting General Counsel. I immediately liked Richard – how could you not – and was struck by the warmth, humour and intelligence with which he approached his leadership. Soon after meeting …

Richard was everything you would want a lawyer to be; calm, polite, practical, clever and able to argue his point brilliantly. He supported me and the Kantar team fantastically on so many occasions. More importantly he was also a lovely human being and it was always great to have the opportunity to catch up …

Richard and I used to joke about who was going to be good cop or bad cop before starting any contract negotiations, but in reality, Richard was always the good cop as the combination of his pragmatic approach, his quiet steeliness and his fun sense of humour helped win so many clients over.    …

Very had the humour and dry wit of Richard. It made it a joy to work with him ~  On the engagements we worked together, he took the time, effort and energy to go through each of the clauses and impart his knowledge, experience and wisdom. No matter how infrequently we did work together, …

It is hard to accept the passing of my dear friend Richard. I want to remember one day, in Hermanus, South Africa, when we sneaked out of the office, had lunch on the beach, and took a long walk with him, Pam, Emma and I on the promenade. We relaxed, laughed, had good food, …

Richard totally changed my perception of what working on contracts and liaising with legal meant. Always working so hard and diligently with a full understanding of the commercial objective. In fondest memory of Richard our much loved friend and colleague.  It’s truly rare that the shock of a person’s passing and the genuine affection in which they are held by all is so profound but this is so true of Richard.  He was one of those extraordinary people that would make the office …

Richard was uniquely talented, reliably knowledgable and courageous in character.  He had a strong conscience and invested in relationships. His greatness emanated from his paradoxical blend of confidence and humility, always with a twist of quick wit.  These characteristics rightfully endeared so many to him. Working side by side with Richard across the years was …
