In Loving Memory of

Margaret

Margaret Hammond

Margaret Hammond, our much-loved Chef of many years, sadly passed away unexpectedy earlier this week. One of the most popular members of staff at St Margaret’s, her good humour, kind nature and wide, infectious smile meant that she very quickly became far more to the girls than just someone who simply provided their lunches. Every child from Reception to Year 11 knew her, as did all the staff, and visiting past pupils were always quick to head to the kitchen to say hello to her. Always ready to give a hug to those younger members of the school wanting a bit of comfort, she was also incredibly popular with the older girls and could often be seen having a laugh with them as they queued for lunch. When a school cookbook was made with input from pupils and parents, there was much demand for her sticky chicken recipe and other tasty dishes that became many of the pupils’ favourites. Her larger-than-life personality was evident in all encounters with her and when she recently came back to visit the School, it was more like a rock star had turned up and not a former member of staff, judging by the buzz of excitement amongst the girls and the echoes of “Margaret’s here, Margaret’s here!” that rang around the corridors. She will be very much missed by all who met her here.

Margaret leaves behind her four young children and her husband.

Margaret was a wonderful part of St.Margarets. There is a clue in the name. Always smiling, always happy, she seemed to know not only every girl and their name but also what their favourite lunch was! As school chaplain, I always loved popping into the kitchen to see her and feel the special atmosphere she created with her team. The chef in a school or a family is always a huge contributor to the health and happiness of everybody. We will miss her hugely. John 11.25 Jesus said…I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even though they die. Yours, Alistair Tresidder, School Chaplain and Vicar of St.Luke’s Church, Kidderpore Avenue  …

Margaret was the happiest, most cheerful person you could ever wish to meet. Her smile lit up the room and brought warmth to those of us lucky enough to have known her. She knew and cared about each and every one of us at St Margaret’s and always found the time for a quick chat, sharing in our joy and cheering us up when we were down. She was a true inspiration who will be greatly missed. …

Margaret had a generous spirit and a warm, loving soul. She was a favourite amongst the girls because she always had time for them and always made them feel special. Her food was amazing; she clearly cared so deeply about her work and put as much love into the food as she did with every other part of her life. She spoke so fondly of her family and was clearly so proud of them all. I hope you take comfort in knowing how close we hold her memory and how much she made a difference to our days.    …

I was extremely lucky to know Margaret, she was the bravest, strongest and kindest woman I had ever known. Right after I had finished my lunch I would go straight to the kitchen, where Margaret was expecting me for our daily hug. Margaret’s hugs weren’t just ordinary hugs, when you hugged her you felt comforted and reassured that everything would be alright and all your worries would fly away, you could smell that sweet scent that Margaret always smelt of, it was a sort of welcoming smell. So whenever I was feeling down or I just needed a hug, Margaret would always be there to hold me. Even after school when I had a club she would give me some cookies or a flapjack to boost my energy. Margaret was nothing but kind and caring to me, just a smile from her would make my day, she was such an amazing women that i loved very much, and i miss her a lot.  …
