JAMES McVEIGH — or fondly known as ‘Jim, Jimbo and McVeigh’. James joined Manor High School, Wednesbury in the West Midlands in July 2005. He had been recruited by Sandwell LEA to teach Humanities and English. From the first time we met him, in Belfast, we knew that he was going to be a true ‘Manor’ stalwart; willing to give his all for those around him. James was committed from day one. He displayed a real love of teaching and a love of the pupils, building great relationships with pupils and staff alike. He was kind natured, dedicated to being the best he could be and providing the best experience for his pupils – both in and outside of the classroom. Nothing was too much trouble and he quickly became a valued member of staff and a popular teacher. James always wanted to learn from more experienced colleagues and take advice on how to approach situations and the challenges of teaching in a socially deprived area of Wednesbury. Communities near and far have lost a great friend, worker and advocate of all that is GAA. James was part of the panel that took my son Hugh for the U14 Antrim football development squad. Always there, always helping, always offering one to one advice, always picking up the bibs, the balls that are left behind. He gathered the boys round 1 time and asked who had their gumshields; very few hands went up. He proceeded to take his false teeth out and delcare ‘this is what happens when you don’t wear a gumshield to training!”. Still smiling. James when your mother and father decided to move back to Randalstown the home of your grandfather and great grandfather – The Skipper – you improved the club more than anyone could have imagined. You brought your great enthusiasm for all things gaelic, your ability to coach, your positive approach to everything the club was involved in along with the encouragement you gave to everyone you came into contact with.
