Helen McAree

Helen worked in Lambeth for most of her career, joining as an Outreach Worker when Rosendale Children’s Centre was just an idea, and progressing over 15 years to manage first her team of Better Start workers and then a cluster of three children’s centres. In January 2020, she became Parenting Lead for Lambeth, a role that she seemed made for. It was very apparent to all of us she worked with that Helen’s professional life and identity was very important to her: she had the most amazing work ethic and commitment, and clearly gained great satisfaction from doing work she loved. In doing so, she made a huge difference to the lives of so many children and families, and brightened the lives of all of us too.

In this little book, Helen’s many colleagues (some of whom were also Helen’s close friends) have written down a few of their favourite stories or memories of working with Helen. Our hope is that as Charlie, Noah and Eliza grow up these stories will help them to know a little bit about how their mum was at work, and perhaps take from that some of the inspiration which Helen would have given them if she could.

Helen will be a missed within the Children’s Centre and Lambeth Council community. I met Helen in 2020 as she became my manager within Lambeth Council. We met at Costa Coffee in person before COVID struck the world and then our conversations where over Microsoft teams. Charlie and Noah, your mummy would talk about …

It has been an honour working with a colleague as amazing as your Mum. I remember my first day in the Parenting role and Helen meeting me downstairs at the Civic Centre. From the onset Helen was welcoming towards me, this put my nerves at ease straight away.  I began my role in the …

I met Helen in March 2009 when I started work at Rosendale Children’s Centre and onward to Liz Atkinson children’s centre up until December 2019. Helen had great passion for her work. She was a very organised person, she was fearless and always ready to lend a helping hand. She was very easy going …

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Helen when she started working in Lambeth’s Early Years and Parenting service. A recent restructure and some big changes to the Parenting service meant that Helen had joined (taking on the role of Parenting Lead) at a perfect time for someone to come in, transform …

I met Helen in the early days of the Lambeth Children’s Centre programme. Her reputation for innovation was legendary even back then.  Fast forward to 2015 when Lambeth was awarded lottery funding to develop new and different ways to support familes with young children. Helen jumped on board and fully embraced the opportunity  to …

I started working with Helen initially when she was a Senior Better Start Worker and then in her role as a Parenting Lead. Helen was incredibly supportive of the work the Parent and Infant Relationhsip Service (PAIRS) was undertaking in the local community and was really interested in infant mental health and parenting. When …

We started working at Rosendale School on the same day back in September 2008 and had the amazing opportunity of starting the children’s centre from scratch. As the building wasn’t finished, we had to first operate from a small portakabin in the playground planning, preparing and getting ready to launch Rosendale Children’s Centre. When …

Noah, Charlie and Eliza your mother was a star!  She was a determind, nurturing and caring manager to us in the parenting team and most importantly the most amazing mummy to you all.  She spoke about you every chance should could, loved to share your photos and kept us up to date with all …

I met Helen quite early on when she joined as the Outreach Worker at Rosendale. At the time, I was responsible for setting up the performance management framework and data collections for children’s centres (what a mouthful!).  It was all new, we were learning a lot on the go and not always got everything …

In 2013 I joined the Outreach team Helen managed at Cherry Tree, Rosendale and Liz Atkinson Children’s Centres.  Helen was an exceptional manager, and her dedication to achieving the best outcomes for children and their families was outstanding.  She shared her skills and knowledge generously, always making an extra effort to do far more than …
