In Memory of

Grace O'Malley-Kumar

It is with great sadness that we remember Grace (OB, 2011 – 2022), who has been suddenly and tragically taken from the Bancroft’s community.

Grace was a talented young woman who embraced all opportunities that life afforded.

Her youthful energy, talent, courage and strength were inspiring qualities. Many will remember the sportswoman whilst others the aspirations she had for the medical profession.

We will cherish the memories of Grace and the special person she was to the Year of 2022.

The thoughts of the whole Bancroft’s community are with Grace’s family at this difficult time. Grace will be much missed.

We invite you in the pages of this Book of Condolence to share your prayers, memories and thoughts, be they happy or sad, so that it might, in time, bring comfort to Grace’s grieving family.

I was greatly saddened and shocked to hear of the death of Grace in such a terrible way. To know how she must have worked, played and dreamed at Bancroft’s School for a bright future that has been taken away.  My sincere condolences to her family, and all who taught her or worked with her at school or in sport.  …

To Grace’s family we send our warmest condolences. May your memories of her always bring comfort. My wife and I visited the school on OBs’ Day 2022 and by chance were escorted by Grace, showing us new parts of the school. For us this has added sad poignancy to these tragic events, but we have personal memories of her grace and charm. …

There is universal horror at the tragic deaths of Grace and of Barnaby Webber and Ian Coates.  May the spirit of the OBA bring renewed courage and comfort to family and friends. As a Benefice Worship Leader here in rural North Wiltshire I have tolled the bell in our village church of St James the Great and led prayers for Grace at our Deanery Synod service in Chippenham. At the end of May my best schoolfriend, Eddie Broadbridge, stayed with us in North Wraxall.  See his moving tribute to Grace – and do get a copy of his brilliant translation of The Essential N.F.S. Grundtvig by Anders Holm. …

Ellie Smith 1993-2000

My thoughts are with Grace’s family, friends, fellow students and teachers at this devastating time. She will never be forgotten and I hope that by sharing stories and always keeping her memory alive in this way, comfort can be found. She will continue to be an inspiration to those who knew her, I have no doubt. …

Laurie Margolis (1961-68)

Grace and family — I think there’s a gap of 42 years between when I left Bancroft’s, 1968, and you started. I was 60 when you began your Bancroft’s career. Of course we never met, but I have thought quite a lot about you using the same classrooms, walking through the same cloisters, playing on the same playing fields, (hopefully they’ve changed the desks) as I did decades earlier. You clearly made a huge and wonderful impression through your school life, on your sport, and into university. What happened is unthinkable and unimaginable. What a potential loss to British medicine. Your memory will become a major part of the school’s long history. Most sincere condolences to family and your school friends and colleagues   Laurie Margolis, 1961-68 …

Caroline Mitchell 1980-1982

Although I did not know Grace, I was saddened to hear the tragic news, such a waste of a young life and totally unecessary. Deepest condolences to her family and friends. …

Christopher O’Connor Thompson (1970-2000)

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Grace. May their memories of happy times eventually conquer their grief. …
