Dr. Shaun Speed was a great lecturer and content expert. During my undergraduate days at SIT-UOM, he always delivers engaging and insightful lectures. He was always approachable to students’ questions and feedback. When I embarked on my PhD study at NUS recently, he agreed to collaborate with me as a content and methods expert without hesitation, generating two manuscripts in high-impact journals together with my advisor- Liaw Sok Ying. We also recalled how Dr. Shaun Speed sets aside time to meet us across different time zones and his thoughtful comments to improve our work. I first met Shaun when I was on the undergraduate course at Manchester, I always remember how kind and supportive he was. I was lucky to continue to know him several years later during my years studying a PhD. He always kept a keen interest in what I was doing and he offered to be my internal examiner. After that, I worked with him as a colleague. I always remember him being approachable and supportive, and most of all his laugh. I will miss him greatly as I am sure many others will.  …

I remember Shaun for his patience, generosity and kindness. We worked together for the UoM BSc programme at SIT, Singapore. From the first day we met, he was clear in ensuring the post-registration programme was sustainable. He involved me in most of the module he was teaching and gradually over a few years handed the module to me. I am always grateful for the friendship and trust that has developed between us. He listened to my suggestion for changes to the module and gave very practical advice. He was always encouraging and valued feedback from staff and students. I was deeply saddened to hear of Shaun’s death. In the 20 years I worked with him, he was a colleague that I always knew that I could trust to be supportive and to act with honesty, integrity and kindness. He was immensely kind when I had cancer. He made me laugh too. He knew what it meant to be collegial in the workplace and was always ready to share ideas and experiences. His dedication to the students also shone out in everything he did. I was privileged to work with him teaching sociology both in Manchester and Singapore and also to co-supervise a number of PhD students with him. It always brightened up a dull day to see Shaun walking down the corridor. We made the first trip to Singapore together and I won’t forget in a hurry the sight of Shaun trying on shorts in the middle of a market in Little India or eating ‘pig organ soup’ in the hawker market. He will be missed and mourned by everyone whose lives he touched. Rest in peace Shaun and God bless you …

I worked with Shuan when he was teaching in the UOM program for Singapore nursing students. Our paths crossed again when he readily accepted my invitation to be our external examiner for the SIT-UofG degree program. We were all excited to have him on board as our EE. I will always remember his support and kindness. He is the most gentle person and a wonderful colleage. He will be dearly missed by all of us in Singapore…Rest in peace… …

I am so very grateful for the care and support offered by Shaun as I started at The University of Manchester. Always approachable, always keen to support.
