A Book of Remembrance

Carol

Carol Calvert

Carol Calvert volunteered with St John Ambulance since 1992. In her time in St John, she performed many duties, she was the Divisional Superintendent at the former Saddleworth Adults for a number of years. In recent times she has been based in Denton Unit where she was the training lead for the Unit. Carol was a regular at all local community events and dedicated a large amount of her volunteering time supporting the MCFC and MUFC stadiums. During the COVID Pandemic, Carol supported at the Manchester Hyper Centre helping to train over 1,000 volunteers in vaccination. Carol was a dedicated trainer and would also help at local unit and district training events. A large percentage of front line volunteers in Manchester would have received training from Carol at one point in the volunteering career. Carols dedication to training did not stop just inside St John, she was a keen community advocate and looked for every opportunity to be out in the community training first aid awareness skills.

Carol was one of the first SJA volunteers I ever met, and one of the most memorable. I feel incredibly lucky to have been trained by and worked alongside her. Her support and encouragement has been a huge part of my SJA experience, and I’m sure a lot of others feel the same. It really won’t be the same without her.  Carol, I hope one day I can be half the trainer you were. Thank you for everything💚 …

Carol, I’ve known you as long as I have been in SJA, we had our differences and sadly I was the one that closed Saddelworth Unit down, dont shoot the messenger I was told to do that. It was so nice to see you again at Denton Unit and wow how you slotted into the unit and helped them all in so many ways. It’s ben lovely to see the unit training at a super high standard. Thank you for everything and I will remember you fondly and will always respect you. Rest in peace and Pro Fide xxx Helen G or as you used to call me “oh its her” xxx …

Carol, you have done a lot for me and were always there for me. I learnt a lot from you and for that I’m eternally grateful. You always brought a smile to a course and raised the mood with a good story. I remember once in relation to everything changing you once said “one way may not be right, but as long as it’s not wrong, you can’t get in trouble”, something I’ve only learned the true wisdom of in time. Sleep well, you will be missed. …

Carol, I will never forget the first time we met “who are you” came the introduction, as you came into Aston Garage to collect an ambulance, for a Saddleworth event, and I never looked back, we were sparing partners at meetings and had fun along the way. It was during the training we did together that I will always remeber, now the training room will fall silent, you brought so much to St John Ambulance and you are going to be missed by so many of us, its going to be a challange to stand in the training rooms waiting for you to get us going and not hearing you shout “have I missed anything”  There are so many things I could add, but you would tell me to “get on with it” so,  Thank you for everything you did, I am going to miss you.    …

Carol, you inspired thousands through your dedication, commitment and enthusiasm for saving lives. May you rest in peace. You may be gone but your legacy with St John Ambulance, Greater Manchester and further afield will definitely live on. It was a true pleasure volunteering along side you training at the recent Hypercentre in Stockport.  My thoughts and prayers to your family and close friends.  Semper Fidelis …

I’ve volunteered with Carol many times having a good laugh as we had very similar sense of humour. Carol is going to be really missed in the volunteer training as she would always jump in when they were short staffed.  Carol gave me lots of toy knitting patterns… leaving them in the store room at Denton so other Work Place Trainers could get them to me. I use these & other patterns to fundraise for SJA so she will still be instrumental in raising funds for her chosen charity. Goodbye Carol … I’ll still look for you when doing a duty 💚 …
