James Alexander Michael

In respectful remembrance of James Michael, a dear colleague who will be deeply missed.

James has been an integral member of the Netcraft family since he first joined us in 2012. A highly talented Senior Software Engineer, who graduated top of his year at Warwick University, he always put immense effort and dedication into his role and delivered work of exceptional quality. He was also a kind, caring and patient person who enjoyed helping others, including mentoring a number of younger team members as they started their careers.

We feel very privileged to have known and worked with James, and his loss has been keenly felt across the whole company.

Our thoughts, shared grief and deepest sympathy are with his family at this sad time.

James Long

I’ve had the honour of working with James since back in 2015 whilst I was an intern, and have seen him grow and flourish over the years. I remember first hearing fables about him and how good he was, and whilst that was true, he was also a truly kind and compassionate person. I became much closer to James since rejoining as a full time member of staff, and saw him excel at even the most difficult technical problems, meticulously documenting them to make sure other people could learn from him. He truly was a beacon of what we should all aspire for. He had a great personality and sense of humour, and his loss will truly be felt forever. He will live on through the knowledge, wisdom, insight and passion he imparted to so many of us, for decades to come. I am incredibly grateful to have known James, through both the highs and the lows, and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and other friends. I hope you’ve found a better place jam. James x …

James was one of the most talented engineers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He took great pride in his work and pushed us all to do better whilst always remaining kind and humble. Many of us owe a great deal to his insight and patient willingness to help others. I will miss hearing his opinion, quick wit and dry sense of humour. He will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him. I hope that he has found a better place away from the difficulties of this world, and that his loved ones find some comfort in the knowledge that he will not be forgotten. …

James was the first person I worked with at Netcraft, when I joined 2018, as my assigned supervisor. James and I started at Netcraft around the same time, working in the same room for those first few months was truly a wonderful experience. I have been amazed ever since at James’s ability to quietly work away and come back a remarkably short time later with a fully working solution! That quiet dedication is something I really admired, I will miss him greatly. …

I first met James in 2014 and enjoyed working with him in the years that followed. Meticulous and methodical, he would solve any task presented to him. He was trustworthy in all senses of the word. I’ll never forget his subtle dry humour, particularly in sysadmin circles. James was a friend as well as a colleague. We enjoyed occasional dog walks with Charlotte, and I was so excited when he turned up at my “vanwarming” party just before the pandemic. That was the night that I learned of his love for show tunes and theatre music. jam: we miss you like hell. Thank you for all the smiles and laughs and Makefiles and lunchtime quips. I hope you’re in a more peaceful place now. …

James was a brilliant help and guide who proactively solved problems for those working with him and made time to help those he worked with. He was a great example to those whom he managed.
